Globalitude: A global approach to life, from the inside out
Acknowledge and celebrate the richness and complexity within you, and in the world around you
At Globalitude, our name isn't just a catchy title; it's a meaningful reflection of our philosophy and approach to coaching.
Vishen Lakhiani, founder of Mindvalley and author of The Code of the Extraordinary Mind, states that language has a powerful impact on how we create our reality. He suggests that coining new words expands our vocabulary, our systems for living, and ultimately, our minds.
This idea resonated deeply with me. So, I decided to create a new word—one that would encapsulate a vision that is expansive and, at the same time, deeply personal.
Having spent years as an international executive and an avid traveler, the concept of "global" is present in all aspects of my life. On the other hand, I’m also a grammar nerd. So, I combined it with the suffix "-itude," which signifies "the condition or act of being something."
Thus, Globalitude stands for the act of taking a global approach in everything we do. It expands the concept of "global" beyond an adjective, making it a noun—one that we can use as a philosophy and a way of life.
Being Global from the Inside Out
But what exactly does "taking a global approach" entail?
Conventionally, "global" refers to "relating to the whole world." In action, this means cultivating an awareness of the cultural, environmental, historical, and socioeconomic uniqueness of every country, every region, every corner of our planet. It's about acknowledging and celebrating the richness and diversity of our world, and seeing our differences as an opportunity to foster innovation beyond what we can create individually.
This outward-looking perspective is vital in our increasingly interconnected world, where understanding and appreciating diverse viewpoints is key for effective collaboration and responsible global citizenship.
However, the act of being global also resonates from within. In this sense, we embrace the definition of "considering or relating to all parts of a situation or subject." At Globalitude, we believe in considering all parts that shape who you are – all the different aspects that interact within you to create your unique self. When we acknowledge, celebrate, and align all the elements that we’re made of, we can operate from a place of genuine confidence, satisfaction, and purpose in our daily actions and decisions.
These two dimensions are not separate; they are deeply intertwined. It is only when we can see and accept ourselves from a holistic, "global" perspective—embracing all the diverse aspects that make us who we are—that we can begin to act with true authenticity and empathy in our surroundings and towards the wider world.
This journey of inner alignment is the foundation for meaningful outward action. When we are at peace with our own inner complexity, we are better equipped to understand and appreciate the complexity of the world around us, and to take on the challenges that it may bring.
Aligning your Personal and Professional Worlds
This dual interpretation of "global" is why our approach to coaching always encompasses two fundamental areas of our existence—the ones that we're constantly developing and evolving: the personal and the professional.
Too often, we are expected to manage our personal and professional lives as if we were two different people. Consider moments of significant life transitions – moving to a new country, becoming a parent, or taking on a highly challenging new role at work. During these times, immense pressures at work happen in parallel with profound personal shifts. The unrealistic expectation is that one won't affect the other.
This erroneous separation is a major driver of modern illnesses like burnout, anxiety, depression, and feelings of dissociation at work and in social life. It leads to doubting the quality and relevance of our contributions, feeling inadequate, questioning the very meaning of our efforts, and even judging our own personalities. Ultimately, this can lead to the feeling of having failed at both work and life.
Reach Out: Your Well-being Matters
If you're experiencing any of these feelings or noticing similar thoughts and emotions beginning to surface, please don't hesitate to reach out for support.
Talk to your family, friends, manager, or HR team, seek out a professional therapist or coach – or even better, engage with all of them! Don't let thoughts of inadequacy or shame prevent you from discussing these vital topics.
These feelings are far more normal and common than you might realize, yet we are still collectively in the process of opening up the conversation and raising awareness on the matter.
And above all, don’t let the pressure continue to build up while you act as if nothing is happening. Sooner or later, these suppressed feelings will emerge, and the longer you wait, the more challenging it can become to address them effectively. Early intervention and open communication are key to preserving your personal well-being and, therefore, your ability to perform in all areas of your life.
